ARTBLOG MAY 2018: Mind Games at University of Delaware’s MFA Thesis Exhibit
“Artist Simone Welsh collects swabs of bodily fluids, willingly given to her by her friends, places them in small circular plates filled with Trypticase Soy Agar, and displays it as part of her work. Six circular forms stand out on a simple grid of repeated geometric neon pink squares. From afar, the circles look like distorted images of a full moon, but in fact they are what chief curator of The Delaware Contemporary, Kathrine Page, calls “self-portraits of [Welsh’s] friends.”
Ipseity at the Torpedo Factory Art Center: January 21, 2017 - March 5, 2017
In the new all-media show at Target Gallery, the contemporary exhibition space for the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 17 artists explore their personal selfhood. Ipseity, defined as individual identity, features artwork that touches on themes of gender, religion, ethnicity, sexuality and other labels people use to identify themselves. Jessica Kallista, founder of Olly Olly alternative art space in Fairfax, Virginia, juried the exhibition.
